Buying a Dog
Findapup Guide to Buying a Dog
The introduction of a puppy to your family home is a wonderful experience but before you carry on there are many things that must be considered.
A puppy is like a baby and will soon become a well loved member of your family.
FINDAPUP aims to find loving homes for all breeds that are available and has prepared the following guide that we feel should be read prior to embarking on any purchase. We hope that you will find this useful when selecting your breed.
REMEMBER A PUPPY IS FOR LIFE (UP TO 15yrs in some cases)
| 1 | Are you and all family members happy to take on the commitment and responsibility of owning a dog? |
| 2 | Have you considered the effect that owning a dog will have on your children, other household pets or the elderly? |
| 3 | Will the introduction of a puppy have any effect on your family health (allergies)? |
| 4 | Are you prepared for a lively bundle of fun and energy that will chew / dig up the garden / need toilet training / demolish the kitchen and leave dirty paw marks all over the house ? |
| 5 | Will the dog you seek be a House Pet, a Show Dog, a Kennel Dog. Consider as well whether you want a dog or a bitch ? |
| 6 | Are you allowed to keep pets where you live ? |
| 7 | Do you have the space for a dog and facilities for exercise at hand ? |
| 8 | Can you afford the upkeep for the selected breed? Apart from the initial purchase outlay, feeding and vet fees can be very expensive! |
| 9 | Do you have sufficient time and are you fit enough to provide the daily exercise that your dog will need? |
| 10 | What sort of Dog are you looking for? Do you want a Pedigree dog? Do you want a puppy or older dog? Have you considered a Rescue dog? |
When selecting a puppy we would advise that you always try to use a reputable breeder.
You should be prepared to be quizzed by the breeder as they will want to satisfy themselves that their pups are going to secure loving homes.
Do not be afraid to ask questions yourself and seek advice for instance on diets, worming, and injections. Also ask the breeder if they would have the puppy back should certain things go wrong.
TRY TO GET THE BREEDER TO WRITE THIS IN ANY CONTRACT OF SALE. CHECK YOUR PUPPY
When looking for a puppy try to see if it is lively and active, look carefully for injury / cough / tenderness on the body A CHECK OVER BY THE LOCAL VET IS RECOMMENDED within 7 days of any purchase.
PET INSURANCE should be considered. Vet fees can be very expensive should the need arise, who knows what lies around the corner. If you can afford it we would recommend that you take out some form of insurance. There are many firms on the market giving a wide range of benefits.
FINDAPUP does not make any recommendations other than for you to seek out reputable people and companies to deal with.
FINDAPUP wishes you every success with your venture.
